What happens if I decide to live and work abroad before I have paid off my loan?

If you go abroad and are no longer within the UK tax system the Revenue can no longer be involved in your loan repayments and the Student Loans Company (SLC) takes over. If you go overseas you must let the SLC know. The SLC has the power to impose very tough penalties if you fail to provide them with all the details to which they are entitled so make sure you get everything sorted out with them before you leave the country. Their Helpline is a Freephone number 0800 40 50 10 - Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:30pm.

If you want to know whether you will still come under the UK tax system when you go abroad you can contact the HMRC Residency by phone or you can e mail them instead.

You might also want to have a look at the UKCISA website which has a lot of information for students going abroad.
