Understanding HMRC forms

One of the big challenges for HMRC is to design forms that the average person can understand and complete easily.

Very often the actual information-gathering or explanation form from HMRC does not use simple language and is difficult to complete for people whose lives rarely come into contact with official forms.

What we want to achieve in this section is a “translation service” for official forms, so giving confidence to people that they both understand what is required of them and the implications of the questions asked.

There are many hundreds of such forms, but we have set ourselves the task of annotating some of the more important and common forms. Our objective is to explain the jargon, provide extra information and make their completion easier. This is work in progress, but by mid 2011 we hope to cover all the following HMRC forms:

PAYE forms
P2
P46
P38S

Repayment forms
P50
P53
P85
R40
R43

Tax credit forms
TC600
Award notice
TC689
TC846

Other forms
P161
R85
R105

If we have dealt with a particular form it will have a live link to it.

Please let us know if you have found a form which you have found difficult to complete. Write to our contact us section.
