The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) came into existence in 1998 as a continuation of an initiative started by John Andrews whilst President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1997/98.
The objective was to give a voice to those taxpayers who could not afford to pay for tax advice and therefore had to rely on what the Revenue told them or what they were able to glean from the media.
- The full mission of the LITRG is to:
"Target for help and information those least able in the community to afford to pay for advice and make a real difference to their understanding of the systems of taxation and related benefits whilst working to make them more equitable and accessible for their needs".
At the beginning of 1998 LITRG called for volunteers to help fulfill the mission and was gratified by the response. The Chartered Institute of Taxation generously agreed to fund the initiative.
