- TaxHelp for Older People is a charity providing free advice on tax to older people on low incomes who could not otherwise afford any professional help.
- By older - we normally mean those 60 and over and by low incomes - we tend to use a household income of around £15000 a year generally but we try to be flexible if possible. For instance, we can extend the income limit for the disabled, whose outgoings are inevitably higher, or to lower the age for those made redundant in their fifties or taking ill-health retirement. In addition, family and carers of eligible clients may also ask TOP for help.
- The advice sessions are staffed by volunteers from the tax profession who give their services to TOP.
- Some of the major and most common problems tackled by TOP include coding notice issues especially in year of first pension receipt, overpayment of tax, claiming refunds, registering for gross interest on savings, self-assessment and help for the recently widowed. Sometimes a little reassurance that there is no need to worry can be all that is needed.
- TOP now has a major and expanding presence in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Where possible, face-to-face appointments are made at surgeries held in premises such as Age Concerns or CABs.
- In areas where we do not yet have advisers within reach, we will handle requests for help by telephone and post, so none should feel excluded from the service. Home visits will also be arranged where necessary.
- To seek help, you should call the central helpline on 0845 601 3321 from any part of the UK. This is a lo-call number and will not cost you more than a local call. If the line is not manned or busy, simply leave your name and telephone number and TOP will call you back. There is no need to call again unless you have not heard within 24 working hours.
- Alternatively have a look at the TOP website where you can find a lot more information on TOP activities and useful phone numbers.
