LITRG is a group of like minded people who joined together with the support and encouragement of the Chartered Institute of Taxation to give a voice to those people on low incomes who battle against the complexity of the tax/benefits systems.

The great majority of members of LITRG are unpaid.

LITRG started life as group of tax specialists. But following the introduction of tax credits (welfare benefits dressed in tax clothing) the advantages of a broad church of backgrounds became very clear. We have expanded our membership accordingly.

Tax and welfare benefits are similar concepts, but divided by different technical language and approach.

We anticipate that the convergence of systems is likely to accelerate over the next few years. We welcome those moves provided it can be shown that convergence will allow a greater understanding for the claimant/taxpayer about their own position.
