Welcome to our guide for low income workers

Since April 2003 the low income worker has had to cope with the complexity of the new tax credits regime as well as the traditional tax system.

In this guide we will explain many of the more basic aspects of the tax world for workers on low incomes. Tax can be complicated, so that it is not possible to cover every topic. But where your particular question is not answered, we will try and point you to where you can get further help.

Some income is taxable and some is tax-free. We have listed the most common types of tax-free income here. Everything else is likely to be taxable. Click here to see a list of taxable income sources.

You may also find useful information in other parts of the website - for example if you want to know about Capital Gains Tax or Inheritance Tax - there are introductions to these topics in the pensioner part of the website or you can click here for Capital Gains tax and click here for Inheritance tax. We also have a section specifically aimed at offering guidance for disabled people which you can have a look at here.

We want you to pay only the right amount of tax. If you have a particular problem that does not appear to be covered in our advice, then please contact us.
