On a very low income?

This section has been written especially for non-taxpayers and for the few people for whom the 10% starting rate for savings is of benefit.

If you want more information on tax rates generally have a look at Which tax rate applies to me?

In the first section we consider how you become Non taxpayers or 10% taxpayers. We then move on to consider the most frequent issue for non-taxpayers and that is the subject of Interest and non-taxpayers.

Getting your money back from HMRC is considered under Claiming a repayment.

Finally we take a brief look at gifts to charity and Community Amateur Sports Clubs under the Gift Aid scheme which can be a problem for non-taxpayers.

If you are someone on a very low income it is likely that you may be entitled to one of the means-tested State benefits, such as pension credit, housing benefit or help with your council tax. If you do pay a little tax, it can be treated as a deduction from your income in calculating the income upon which the means-tested benefit is calculated, so check with your benefits provider whether it has any impact on your entitlement.
