Benefits

State benefits for students are a complex area, so we cannot provide a comprehensive guide on this website. But you might also want to look at:

• our general state benefits checklist for low-income workers

• our tax and benefits checklist for disabled people, if you are disabled or caring for someone.

Otherwise, we primarily suggest that you look at the Directgov website for more Financial Help for Young People, which has subsections on benefits and financial help if you are in education. But take care that you are looking at the right information for you as sometimes rules can be different depending on whether you are living or studying in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Directgov also offers a section on Benefits for higher education students with low incomes.

Disabled students might also find the Disability Alliance (Disability Rights UK from 01 Jan 2012) website’s checklist of benefits helpful.
