Migrants and tax

Updated on 10 May 2016

Welcome to the 'migrants section' of our website. This section of the website is designed to provide migrants and their advisers with access to information on how to deal with the tax issues faced by migrants coming to and leaving the UK.

Throughout this part of the site we use the term ‘migrant’ to mean anyone coming to live, work or study in the UK.

Migrants Resource Centre and Advice NI are two organisations that assist migrants with various issues. You can find out more about Migrants Resource Centre on their website. You can find out more about Advice NI on their website. If you requre assistance from other organisations please visit the section 'where can I get further help?' below.

What information and help can I find in this section?

For those who want to find out basic information, we have produced a guide which gives very basic information about the UK tax and benefits system. It includes a useful glossary which explains some of the more technical words.

For those who want a bit more information, we have produced a set of factsheets. These factsheets cover the topics in the basic guide in a little more detail.

For advisers, or migrants who want a greater understanding about their tax position, this section of the website explains the topics covered by the guide and factsheets in more detail.

If you are not an adviser, we suggest you read the guide first; if you need further information on certain topics, you can refer to the factsheets and then the website content a necessary.

Why do I need to understand the UK tax system?

It is important for you to understand the UK tax system, because this will help you to check that you or your clients are paying the right amount of tax and receiving the right allowances and reliefs.

The UK taxes each individual separately, although there are some special rules for married couples and civil partners.
