HMRC powers and taxpayer rights - LITRG responses
For two years, HMRC have been consulting on modernising their powers on debt collection, investigations, compliance, and charging penalties and interest. In the latest round of consultation, LITRG is pleased to note that some of our recommendations have been taken on board, but we continue to press for adequate safeguards and suitable provision for unrepresented, low-income taxpayers.
Change at HMRC continues apace. LITRG has responded to four recent consultations, the proposals from which may become law through this year’s Finance Act:
Payments, Repayments and Debt: The Next Stage
Interest - Working Towards a Harmonised Regime
Meeting the Obligations to File Returns and Pay Tax on Time
Compliance Checks: The Next Stage
Links to all four responses are given below and many of the issues we raise are inter-related.
