Localising council tax in England - LITRG response

Published on 14 October 2011

In our view any system of council tax and council tax benefit should be transparent, as simple as possible and related to the ability of the individual to pay.

This consultation document sets out the Government’s plans to abolish council tax benefit and replace it with a series of local schemes. Our conclusion is that the proposals will lead to reduced transparency, an increase in complexity for both claimants and local authorities and make work incentives arbitrary.
