The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) is reminding couples that they have until this time next year (5 April 2020) to claim marriage allowance refunds dating back to the first tax year of the allowance, 2015/16.

There are 53 Fridays in the 2018/19 tax year, rather than 52. If you are paid on Friday 5th April and will earn more than £11,850 in 2018/19, then you are likely to encounter a ‘week 53’ issue.

A similar issue may also affect you if you are due to be paid your salary or pension on 6th April but will receive it on Friday 5th April instead because 6th April is a Saturday.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) had delayed issuing penalty notices to those who failed to file their Self Assessment (SA) tax return for the 2017/18 tax year by the usual online filing date of 31 January 2019. These penalty notices are now starting to be issued and should act as a prompt, if you have not yet filed that tax return, to file it now.

Following the release of a report from HM Treasury on time limits in the tax system, it is now virtually certain that the loan charge will come in, as planned, in a week’s time. If you are affected, and haven’t done so already, you need to urgently consider contacting HMRC about settlement.
