Change to GOV.UK Sign-In Screen – Preparing for GOV.UK One Login
Since 10 November 2025, taxpayers signing into HMRC services will notice a new login screen. This new screen introduces an additional option to login: GOV.UK One Login, alongside the existing Government Gateway. However, this is just in preparation for the introduction of One Login. HMRC have confirmed that you cannot use GOV.UK One Login for HMRC services at this stage.
The new login screen (image below) is part of HMRC’s preparation for moving to GOV.UK One Login, which will eventually replace Government Gateway. GOV.UK One Login allows customers to sign in with an email address and password, instead of the 12-digit user ID associated with a Government Gateway. HMRC say they have changed the page to help them prepare for the move to One Login, by testing the new screen and observing behaviour.
GOV.UK One Login can currently be used to access some government services, but not HMRC services.
If you have set up a One Login account for a different government service and try to use the One Login option to sign into HMRC, you will be asked to sign in via the Government Gateway. If you select the option to ‘create new sign in details’, you will be asked to create new Government Gateway sign in details – even if you already have a Government Gateway account.
HMRC are asking users to continue to sign-in with their Government Gateway sign-in details as normal.
Note: You may have been able to prove your identity to use HMRC’s online services using the GOV.UK ID Check app which is part of One Login, but this is not the same as having a full One Login account.
HMRC have provided us with the following key points to remember:
- No immediate action is required: Customers should continue using their Government Gateway sign-in details as usual.
- Selecting GOV.UK One Login will redirect back to Government Gateway for now.
- Customers cannot create a GOV.UK One Login for HMRC services yet.
- Customers cannot sign in to HMRC using an existing GOV.UK One Login created for a different government service
