Updated guidance on signing up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
We have updated our website guidance on When does Making Tax Digital start for me? to reflect HMRC’s new process for signing up taxpayers for Making Tax Digital (MTD) who have not already signed up themselves.
In August 2026, HMRC announced that it would begin contacting and signing up some taxpayers who they think need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax for 2026/27 and who have not yet signed up.
We have updated our guidance to explain what to expect if HMRC contacts you about signing up and what you need to do. The guidance also explains why taxpayers who know they need to sign up may wish to consider doing so themselves rather than waiting for HMRC to contact them.
