UTRs are relevant to those who are in the self assessment system. HMRC have confirmed that, in order to keep taxpayer data secure, they will no longer provide UTR numbers over the phone.

You can instead find your UTR:

  • On the top of the home page of your Personal Tax Account
  • On top of any self assessment letter that HMRC have sent you

If you are still unable to locate your UTR, HMRC will send it to you by post after you have answered a series of security questions. HMRC say it can take up to two weeks to receive the reference number by post.

You can find HMRC’s self assessment contact details on GOV.UK.
